Joe Voller’s time at Merrist Wood College is nothing short of inspiring. Having overcome a debilitating chronic illness that left him unable to walk or get out of bed for nearly four years, Joe made an extraordinary recovery—getting the all-clear from doctors just a week before starting college.
Despite doubts from others, Joe was determined to succeed. “I love proving people wrong,” he says—and prove them wrong he certainly did.
Joe joined the Sports Coaching programme with a clear vision: to become a football coach and, ultimately, a professional manager at the highest level. His passion drove him to work harder than most—staying late after class, pushing himself academically and practically, and earning a string of coaching qualifications including his 1st4sport Level 2 and 3 certificates, first aid, safeguarding, and the FA Level 1 award completed independently.
Outside the classroom, Joe’s dedication continued. Thanks to a placement opportunity offered by tutor Robbie Porter, Joe began coaching with Ultimate Coaching. He quickly rose to the role of lead coach, running after-school clubs, holiday camps, P.E. lessons, and even sessions at the Ultimate Football Academy and performance centre.
Not content with simply gaining experience, Joe launched his own business, Golden Coaching, during his studies. From advertising and administration to coaching and leading a team, Joe has run every aspect of the company—building a successful business from the ground up.
Now, Joe is preparing for his next step: a degree in Football Coaching and Performance at the University of Chichester.
Reflecting on Joe’s time at college, his tutor Robbie Porter says, “It’s been a pleasure to watch Joe grow both personally and professionally over the past two years on the Sports Coaching programme.”
“His passion for coaching, drive to succeed, and initiative in setting up his own sports coaching company while studying has been truly impressive. Gaining a place at Chichester University to continue his coaching journey is a fantastic achievement and well deserved. We’re incredibly proud of what Joe’s accomplished and excited to see where his ambition takes him next.”
Joe describes his two years at Merrist Wood as “the best years of my life” and has this advice for others:
“It’s not easy but as long as you work hard and never give up, you can achieve anything.”
