Principles of Plant Growth and Development RHS Level 2 Certificate

The Principles of Plant Growth and Development Level 2 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) course is a nationally-recognised, one-year, part-time qualification for those wishing to pursue a professional career in horticulture. Also, welcoming amateur gardeners who wish to have their horticultural knowledge formally assessed.

This qualification allows learners to develop plant knowledge deemed essential by the horticultural industries. You will be equipped with the knowledge and understanding to progress to employment within the horticultural sector.

The course assesses the knowledge of the scientific principles underpinning horticultural practices and supports career development.

Instruction is carried out by highly qualified tutors in the extensive ornamental grounds, plant nursery, woodlands areas at the college. Merrist Wood has developed a considerable reputation for horticulture and for it’s award-winning gardens designed and built at RHS Flower Shows. The diverse range of plants in the college’s 400 acre estate, together with purpose-designed buildings, including lecture rooms, laboratories, library facilities and computer suites. Please note: This course is supported by the Education and Skills Funding Agency. 

Eligible learners working towards the certificate may receive funding for some or all of their fees. If funding is received it will be a compulsory requirement for those learners to sit the exams.

Learners who are not eligible for funding and will pay full cost fees are still welcome to join the course and will be given the option of sitting the exams for the certificate.

Your two units include:

Unit 1 Plant Science I, Plant Health, Plant Nutrition & Plant Specification

Unit 2 Plant Science II, Planting Styles, Horticulture & Society & Biodiversity

Please note: Unit 1 will be assessed in February and Unit 2 in June

Primarily classroom delivery with some online provision to aid revision for assessments.

Assessments

This qualification will be entirely assessed by a summative, unseen written examination for each unit. Examination 1 will cover Unit 1 modules and examination 2 will cover Unit 2 modules.

You could progress to:

RHS Level 3 Principles of Horticulture and the RHS Level 2 and Level 3 Practical qualifications.

There are no qualification entry requirements for this course.
