This T-level is a two-year programme that combines classroom lessons, practical instruction, and significant work placements with employers to give you valuable experience in your chosen field.
T-levels are new courses that follow GCSEs and are equivalent to three A Levels. Developed in collaboration with employers, they prepare students for work and higher education by aligning content with industry needs. The T Level in Arboriculture offers a unique chance to gain real-world experience through industry placements, providing essential skills, knowledge and behaviours for arboriculture careers or pursuing higher education.
What you'll learn
Over two years, you will undertake classroom-based learning, developing an understanding of a broad range of issues relevant to employability, such as sustainability, ethical principles, communication, business and health and safety. You’ll also study core arboriculture topics, including tree identification, biosecurity, tree surveys and plant growth and development. Practical elements of the course include chainsaw operation, tree felling, and aerial operations (tree climbing and pruning).
You will also complete a minimum of 45 days of industry placement to further develop your practical skills and arboriculture knowledge. With this blend of technical study programme and industry experience, the T Level in Arboriculture is the first step for students on a pathway to a rewarding career in the arboriculture sector.
How you'll learn and be assessed
Core elements of the T-level are assessed via two exams. There will also be an externally set project and a separate synoptic assessment, in which you must demonstrate your practical skills and theoretical knowledge. Completing a minimum of 45 days of work placement is also required to achieve the qualification.
Progression
Learners who complete the Arboriculture T Level are in a strong position to progress to:
- Full-time employment in the arboriculture sector
- Level 4 Certificate in Arboriculture (available at Merrist Wood College)
- Degree-level courses such as Environmental Studies
Entry requirements
You will need 5 GCSEs at 4 or above, including maths, English language and science.
Applicants will benefit from having some arboriculture experience, but this is not essential.
