Senior Equine Groom Advanced Apprenticeship Standard

This Senior Equine Groom Apprenticeship will provide you with the skills and knowledge required to coordinate the day to day care of horses in the workplace.

Our equine tutors and assessors are based at our Merrist Wood College in Surrey, However, they can deliver this programme entirely within the workplace. If this interests you, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Set within an industry steeped in tradition, yet embracing innovation and technology, this Senior Equine Groom Apprenticeship will provide you with the skills and knowledge required to coordinate the day to day care of horses in the workplace. You will possess all the necessary skills to lead by example and will have the knowledge required to implement effective systems relating to the running of the yard. You will also be capable of organising and monitoring the quality of work and ordering and maintaining supplies.

On successful completion you will be capable of looking after a small to medium sized equine yard and supervising a diverse team of workers. You will be capable of offering advice, support and guidance to your team, whilst possessing appropriate people skills necessary for your chosen sector. You will be required to have a sound base of experience and knowledge and have the right empathy so as to promote the horses’ physical and psychological well-being within a safe working environment.

You will have a sound knowledge of horse anatomy and physiology and the ability to assess and promote health. You will be able to recognise and treat common minor injuries and ailments. You will be capable of presenting horses to a high standard and can demonstrate the skills required to groom, plait and clip horses.

Non-ridden Exercise
You will select one of five specialised routes with additional knowledge and skills, including: breeding, driving, racing, riding or non-riding.

You will also develop core behaviour in safe working, work ethic, responsibility, team work and communication.

‘On the job’ training with mentor support and assessment being carried out within in the workplace, with the college facilities providing extra resources if needed.

The apprenticeship will primarily be delivered within the workplace, with ongoing support from a dedicated performance coach to complete the mandatory qualifications and to learn the required Knowledge, Skills & Behaviours. However, there may also be a requirement for college attendance on additional days to support the delivery of functional Skills.

Apprentices must complete, or have previously completed recognised English and Mathematics Level 2 qualifications. For those with an education, health and care plan or a legacy statement the apprenticeship’s English and maths minimum requirement is Entry
Level 3 and British Sign Language qualification is an alternative to English qualification for whom this is their primary language.

The EPA can only be taken after the conditions of the Assessment Gateway have been successfully achieved.
– Completion of Portfolio
– Achieved Level 2 English & Maths
On conclusion that the assessment gateway requirements have been achieved, the apprentice will
be able to proceed to the end-point assessment stage
of the apprenticeship. It is expected that apprentices will complete the assessment gateway requirements within three months of their planned apprenticeship completion.
EPA Consists of:
– Knowledge Test
– Practical Observation
– Professional Discussion informed by Portfolio

On completion of this standard, apprentices progress into full time employment within the industry or can continue to study at a higher level.

You need to be employed in a suitable position and hold a minimum level 1 (GCSE 2 to 9) maths and English. If not already achieved, the apprentice will have to achieve level 2 English and maths Functional Skills

Typical completion time is likely to be 18-24 months. This may reduce if an apprentice has gained previous relevant knowledge and skills.
