We provide talented young Basketball players (aged 16–19) the opportunity to pursue their chosen academic pathway alongside their basketball ambitions.
Join our elite basketball programme to pursue your aspirations, whether it's becoming a professional player, transitioning into coaching or front office roles. As part of our program, you'll experience the closest thing to professional basketball at the junior level, participating in the Surrey 89ers performance pathway.
Located at Merrist Wood, you'll benefit from a wealth of experienced staff, including coaches and support services covering every aspect needed for elite basketball. You will also have access to a unique environment created to allow talented young players to develop on and off the court. Facilities on campus include our state-of-the-art strength and conditioning suite, and the advanced performance lab.
All basketball activity is based at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford, home to the Surrey 89ers professional team. Based on Manor Park campus, Surrey Sports Park is the University of Surrey’s world-class elite training venue. The sports park offers three elite-level basketball courts with wooden floors, physiotherapy and treatment rooms, a sauna and swimming pool, state of a state-of-the-art weight and fitness studio, and a performance strength and conditioning suite.
Your basketball and academic schedule
Your daily schedule will include on court basketball sessions with academic lessons, supported by modules designed by sports professionals. These modules will enhance various aspects of your game, from game interpretation to mental and physical preparation and recovery.
As a member of the Niners Pathway, your typical week includes:
- Timetabled academic lessons
- Team practice
- Strength and conditioning and prehab sessions
- Competitive Game Schedule in both academy and national leagues
- Performance Analysis and Video Review
- Individual Skill and Shooting sessions.
Students in the Niners Pathway have progression routes into professional basketball through the Surrey SLB squad or into further education often in the UK or USA.
Accommodation can be organised for programme students.
