Alice, Sport and Coaching Level 3 Alumni

I studied at Merrist Wood College between 2016 and 2018.

I did the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport course alongside the Chelsea FC Foundation, so I got to play for Chelsea and do the BTEC at the same time.

I actually tried to do A Levels before coming to Merrist Wood. I spent a year at another college and I didn’t do very well. I heard about Merrist Wood College through football. It was a bit of a last minute decision because A Levels knocked my confidence a bit and I fell out of love with education. I thought why not? I knew I could play football during the day and I wanted to train full time anyway. I’ll at least get a BTEC if nothing else.

Coming here really built my confidence.

I didn’t think I was particularly academic, especially after my experiences with A Levels. The course really helped me and being in a practical setting with people who learn like me really helped. It definitely set me up well and a lot of the modules that we did here correlate to modules that I’ve moved on to do at university.

The tutors and the teachers were really helpful. They were so approachable and they’ve really helped build my confidence.

The facilities are great too. I remember spending a lot of time in the library. It was quite a peaceful space to be and I did a lot of my work on campus rather than going home to do it which was better for me. The staff were always ready to help and we had a smaller class which worked well for me. There was always someone there to help you if you needed it. The Learning Environment and the football pitches have been really good. It’s a big campus and you can spread out if you need to.

I finished with a distinction which I think was a testament to how hard I had worked when I was here.

Being here, I found that the tutors really believed in me which encouraged me and pushed me to do the best I can. Constant encouragement from the guys here, motivated me to go to university.

I want to be a secondary school PE teacher, that’s the plan for now. I’m still trying to be a professional footballer but I’m excited to start my PGCE!
