This City & Guilds qualification will provide you with practical experience and knowledge about the Landscaping/Horticulture industry. It will provide you with an understanding of a range of practices and a set of skills required to succeed in the landscaping industry. It will help give you guidance towards a range of interesting jobs in the industry.
This course allows you to experience various aspects of Landscaping, such as site surveying, installing patios and hard surfaces, garden fencing, building walls, establishing lawns, setting out/planting trees, and using machinery.
You will enjoy a range of practical work on the extensive campus including the opportunity to work in teams and individually. As part of the course, you will meet with industry professionals via guest speakers and attendance at live industry events. In the past, some students have had the opportunity to work at The Chelsea Flower Show and Hampton Court Flower Festival as part of their learning experience.
What you'll learn
You will cover the following units:
Unit 203 – Plant a Tree: The aim of this unit is to provide the learner with the knowledge and skills necessary to prepare a site for planting a standard tree in a domestic or landscape setting.
Unit 223 – Erect a Garden Fence: The aim of this unit is to provide the learner with the skills and knowledge required to erect a garden fence.
Unit 224 – Build Garden Walls and Pillars: The aim of this unit is to provide the learner with the skills and knowledge required to install garden walls.
Unit 225 – Construct Paved Areas in Gardens: The aim of this unit is to provide the learner with the skills and knowledge required to construct a paved area in a garden.
Unit 231 – Lay Turf: The aim of this unit is to provide the learner with the skills and knowledge required to lay turf.
Unit 234 – Safe use of Hedge-trimers: The aim of this unit is to provide the learner with the skills and knowledge required to cut hedges using a pedestrian operated, petrol engine hedge trimmer.
Unit 238 – Safe use of Pedestrian Controlled Mowers: The aim of this unit is to provide the learner with the knowledge and skills to mow turf using a pedestrian-controlled mower.
Unit 239 – Use Pedestrian Controlled Rotary Cultivator: The aim of this unit is to provide the learner with the skills and knowledge required to use a pedestrian controlled rotary cultivator.
Unit 243 – Carry out a Site Survey in 2 Dimensions: The aim of this unit is to provide the learner with the skills and knowledge required to carry out a site survey in two dimensions.
Unit 245 – Lay out Plants for Planting: The aim of this unit is to provide the learner with the knowledge and skills to layout plants for planting.
How you'll learn and be assessed
You will have a range of practical and theory lessons each week delivered in classrooms, workshops and on the wider estate.
You will be expected to study independently.
You will be assessed by a range of project-based practical assessments supported by knowledge based in-class assessments.
Progression
After the course, you could progress to a range of jobs in the industry, such as working for a new build company, landscape installation company, garden and estate maintenance and self-employment in the industry. This could be in the UK or abroad. In the past, learners have gone on to study adult Horticulture courses e.g. RHS level 2, Countryside Management, Garden Design, or Landscape Architecture.
Entry requirements
City & Guilds does not set entry requirements for these qualifications. However, the ability to take written notes during learning will be required. Coursework is made available to learners via an online file-sharing system that students must navigate in their own time.
Written assessments will take the form of questionnaires related to individual topics so clear and legible handwriting will be required.
Additional information
You will need to wear safety boots for practical work. In addition you will need a builder’s measuring tape, a builder’s string line, some work gloves, and suitable work and outdoor clothing for any weather.
