Israel-Iran conflict: Support available for all students

At Activate Learning, we’re proud to be a global, inclusive community, where we strive to treat everyone with fairness, kindness, dignity and respect – we value everyone.

We’re contacting you because we know that the war between Iran and Israel may be deeply worrying and upsetting, especially for students with personal connections to the region.

Many people in Iran are not currently contactable due to the communications blackout, and the uncertainty around loved ones’ wellbeing there is understandably very worrying.  News coverage and conversations on social media are also causing people to feel frustrated and fearful, with discriminatory language and behaviours also causing harm.

We understand that international events like this can have a real impact and everybody’s wellbeing is important to us. If you are feeling anxious, distressed, distracted or simply need someone to talk to, support is available for you at college.

World Mental Health Day 2022 - Activate Learning - College support services

Where you can get support

  • Your tutor – your tutor is often the first person you can speak to. They can listen to your concerns and help you access the right support within the college.
  • Student Experience Teams – you can access a range of support services, including Behaviour and Welfare Officers, Wellbeing Advisors, and College Counsellors, who can provide practical help, emotional support, and guidance. They can also signpost you to specialist services if needed. You can find them by asking in our Advice and Admissions Centres.
  • Safeguarding Team – if you feel unsafe, are worried about someone else, or need advice about a safeguarding concern, you can contact the Safeguarding Team for advice and support.
  • Quiet or faith spaces – if you would prefer a quieter space or would like access to faith-based support, please speak to the Student Experience team who can advise what is available on your campus.
  • Community support – Outside of college, the following organisations can also help:
  • The Mix
  • Young Minds
  • Childline – 0800 1111
  • UK Trauma Council – resources for young people

If you’re feeling distressed and need urgent support:

  • Samaritans: You can call for free on 116 123 to talk to someone at any time, day, or night.

Kindness matters

We also want to recognise that world events can heighten tensions and emotions.

Please continue to treat one another with respect and kindness. If you experience or witness harassment, discrimination or threatening behaviour, either online or on campus, report it to a member of staff. Discrimination will not be tolerated at college, and we will take it seriously and support you.

You can also report this online:

Take care of yourselves and each other and remember that it’s always ok to ask for help. No matter what’s happening and however you’re feeling, Activate Learning is here for you.

Kind regards,

Millie Ellis, Director – Designated Safeguarding Lead
